Title : "Biofuel Engine: A New Challenge"Organized by : International & Corporate Relations Office (ICR), University of Malaya

Synopsis
Alternatives of petroleum fuel for automotive engines are very few. Among this few alternatives, bio-fuel is the most easily adaptable fuel in present fuel supply and distribution system. However, a complete substitution of petroleum fuels by biofuels is not possible from the production capacity and engine compatibility point of view. Yet, marginal replacement of diesel/gasoline by biodiesel/biothanol can prolong the depletion of petroleum resources and abate the radical climate change caused by automotive pollutants. As a conclusion, energy security and climate change factor are the two main driving forces for biofuel development. Biofuel can also stimulate rural development and assist in poverty alleviation since it is product of agro-industry. Nonetheless, there are other problems associated with biofuel usage such as automotive engine compability for long term operation and also food security issues that stem from biofuel production from crop-seed or food-grad oil-seeds. The fuel properties of biofuel and petro-fuels is not 100% identical, therefore, they will exhibit different combustion characteristics. For example, there have been reports of corrosion, carbon deposition and deformation in engine parts particularly the fuel supply system components caused by long term operation using biofuel. Thus, the only way to successfully commercialize biofuel is by introducing dedicated engines that is well-tuned to the combustion characteristics of biofuel and also come equipped with a fuel supply system that is compatible for long term biofuel usage. Brazil showed the way by marketing flexible-fuel vehicle (FFV) or dual-fuel vehicle, which have a dedicated engine for ethanol and gasoline blended fuels. A similar approach can bring a breakthrough in biodiesel production worldwide. So dedicated biodiesel engine is a challenge for mass commercialization and utilization of biodiesel. In this lecture worldwide biofuel scenario is assessed by biofuel policies and standards. Different biofuel processing techniques are also summarized. Advantages and disadvantages of using biofuel were also listed along with some literature reviews. Some guidelines on engine modifications were also described in the lecture. The bottom line is engine that is compatible for biodiesel-diesel blend could be the optimal solution for our present transportation system predicament and also helps tackle the environmental issues. Minor modifications on the engine may not cost much; but continuous research and development is still needed to achieve it.
